The Aesthetic and Scientific Power of Art : Transforming Spatial Atmosphere and Expanding Human Sensibility
Case: Entrance lobby and ground floor interior of Amorepacific Headquarters. Chairman Suh Kyung-bae is recognized as one of the world's Top 200 Collectors, housing an extensive corporate collection.
Every day, we live, breathe, and think within defined spaces. Have you ever experienced how the atmosphere of a well-ordered room subtly yet profoundly shifts the moment a favored work of art is introduced?
A space enriched with art transcends the definition of a mere physical location, evolving into a living stage where human emotion and sensory perception breathe. This emotional transformation is not simply a matter of subjective impression; it is increasingly substantiated by rigorous scientific and academic research.
Within corporate headquarters, offices, and commercial properties, art carries strategic value far beyond superficial ornamentation. An environment activated by art heightens employee engagement while conveying enduring distinction and credibility to clients and visitors. As demonstrated by research from the University of Exeter, integrating art into working environments yields profound, measurable dividends for the entire organization.
Increased Blood Flow in the Brain's Reward Centers
In pioneering neuroaesthetics research conducted at University College London (UCL), Professor Semir Zeki examined brain activity and dopamine responses triggered by art. Functional MRI (fMRI) scans revealed that viewing beautiful artwork increases cerebral blood flow to the brain's medial orbitofrontal cortex—the center for pleasure and reward—by up to 10%. This surge in dopamine closely parallels the neurological response elicited when looking at someone you love, providing neurological evidence that original artwork in daily environments fosters genuine emotional connection and well-being.
Tangible Stress Reduction and Creative Thinking
A joint study by the Business Committee for the Arts (BCA) and Forbes surveyed over 800 employees across global corporations to measure the workplace impact of harmoniously displayed art:
| Response | Share |
|---|---|
| Reported that artwork makes the workplace environment significantly more sophisticated and enriching | 94% |
| Confirmed that engaging with art tangibly reduces daily work-related stress | 78% |
| Noted that artwork actively stimulates new ideas and creative thinking | 64% |
Restoring Cognitive Fatigue and Focus
According to Attention Restoration Theory (ART), established by Professor Stephen Kaplan at the University of Michigan, the human brain experiences acute fatigue when continuously exposed to complex data and sustained stress. Visual art provides “soft fascination”—an effortless, involuntary form of attention that allows direct mental faculties to recover and naturally restores cognitive focus.
Well-curated monumental sculptures and contemporary artworks transform corporate spaces into hubs of innovation, while permanently imprinting an organization's unique cultural stature on every visitor.
Collecting art and placing it within a space welcomes the cumulative time, energy, and philosophy an artist has refined over a lifetime. Whether within a residence designed for quiet contemplation or a dynamic commercial venue fueled by shared vision, the encounter between art and architecture expands human sensibility and quality of life into a new dimension.
